GST registration checklist for first-time applicants
By Pramod A G · July 2026 · Informational only — not legal advice
GST registration looks simple until a mismatched address proof stalls your ARN for weeks. This checklist is for first-time proprietors, partners and companies applying on the GST portal.
Always confirm current thresholds and special-category rules on gst.gov.in / CBIC notifications — not from memory.
Document pack
Assemble PAN, Aadhaar of authorised signatory, photograph, proof of principal place of business, bank proof, and for companies/LLPs the incorporation pack plus authorisation.
- Name spellings must match across PAN, Aadhaar and bank proof.
- Rent agreement often needs owner NOC.
- Keep OTP mobile/email accessible during submission.
Portal flow
Create login → New Registration → fill business, promoters, signatory and place of business → upload documents → e-sign/EVC → note ARN → respond to officer queries → download GSTIN and update invoices/marketplaces.
After GSTIN
Put return due dates on a calendar, choose composition vs regular carefully, and watch e-invoice / e-way bill obligations as you grow.
